What is the ‘Food bank challenge’, how did it begin and how can you find your nearest food bank?

TRAVELLERS across Britain are being praised endlessly for
helping out local food banks thanks to a new ‘food bank
challenge’.

But what do we know about it, and how can we also help?

What is the food bank challenge?

The food bank challenge is a charity challenge set up by proud
traveller Watson Harrop.

Harrop, 29, from County Durham kicked off the challenge by
challenging his Facebook friends to film themselves loading up a
trolley.

Similar to the 2014 Ice Bucket Challenge, this challenge has
spread and gained virality, with thousands of members of the
travelling community coming together to donate.

Going by the hashtag #FoodbackNomination, it challenges members
of local travelling committees to donate to a local food bank.

Those nominated then film themselves handing over their donated
goods, before nominating other friends.

What’s been the result?

Food banks in Gloucestershire, County Durham, Hertfordshire,
Dungannon, Coventry and more have had hoards of donations, and
couldn’t be more thankful.

Stratford-upon-Avon’s food banks have said they were “blown
away” by the donations by the community.

Speaking about the effect his challenge has had on local food
banks, Mr Harrop said that one of his now has enough food to last
until July.

He added: “Sadly wages don’t stretch far enough, but if
people can get a leg up… one of those kids might get something
for Christmas.”

How can we help?

We can help by also donating to food banks across the
country.

Here is
how you can find your nearest food bank and what kind of donations
they accept.
